Miscellaneous / Allerhande
On this page you can find a bit more about everything that came to mind when I was building this website. Since this website is pretty much a work in progress project, I invite interested parties to contact me if they want to share a link to their website and I would appreciate it if that link would be reciprocal (in fact, that is the only stipulation I make).

Translation Memories / Vertaalgeheugens
A common misunderstanding about translations is that many people think that computers make it so easy to translate that it isn't a real profession. Nothing could be further from the truth than that common misconception. However, the rise of computers have enabled the translation industry to come up with a few tools that we translators can put to use. One of these tools is translation memory.
To put it (too) simple, a translation memory is a vast database of phrases, words and expressions which are matched in two languages: the original source language and the intended target language. When a translator is doing his job in a CAT-tool (Computer Assisted Translation-tool), that tool can automatically look in the translation memory if a sentence has been translated before and offer that translation to the translator, who can then decide to use, modify or discard that particular sentence. It seems obvious that this is enormously helpful when translating documents with a high requirement for consistency, such as user manuals or sales contracts. Translation memories are available several different formats, but there is a more or less universal translation memory exchange format which is in theory suitable for all CAT-tools. That format is .tmx and that is also the format I can deliver for each project. |
